July 17th - 19th, 2009
On July 17th – 19th Mission Bay Yacht Club juniors brought home several medals from the US Sailing Junior Olympic Sailing Festival held at NHYC. In the 34 boat CFJ Fleet, Trevor Hecht and Nathan Johnson finished 23rd, showing impressive effort in the strong winds. Kate Rakelly and Colleen Hackett sailed an almost perfect regatta, scoring mostly firsts and seconds in the 10 race series, and took home the gold medal. MBYC’s laser sailors have been training extremely hard this summer in the SDAYC program, and the results speak for themselves. In the Laser full rig fleet, with very consistent results, was Jon Real who finished 11th. With a very close points – spread in the top few spots, Olin Paine sailed an impressive regatta and placed 3rd overall. Kevin Laube sailed fast and placed 2nd. From July 31st to August 2nd the CFJ Junior Nationals were held at San Diego Yacht Club, and drew a tremendous fleet. With over 70 boats registered, this was one of the largest fleets most of our sailors had ever competed against. Off the coast of Coronado, south of Point Loma, great winds and large swell made for competitive racing. Matt Hecht and Chuckie Eaton sailed well and had good upwind boatspeed, and finished 27th. Kate Rakelly and Colleen Hackett had multiple top ten finishes and placed 21st. MBYC junior Trevor Hecht crewed for SWYC skipper Reece Bernet and placed and impressive 6th overall. Mission Bay Yacht Club Again Takes 4 of the 7 Divisions Sailed at the Oceanside Luffin!
Mission Bay Yacht Club again demonstrated that we are a young and hungry sailing team in the San Diego Area. Over this past weekend at Oceanside Yacht Club, the 2008 Double-Handed and Single-Handed Luffin took place. On Saturday, Mission Bay Yacht Club was represented by Kate Rakelly and Colleen Hackett in a CFJ and Alex Ranum and Trevor Hecht in a 420. The day was light and took much concentration on the sailor’s parts and they sailed well and learned a great deal. The team of Kate Rakelly and Colleen Hackett showed great improvement and skill and took home 1st place in the CFJ division. On Sunday, Oceanside Yacht Club hosted the Single-handed Luffin. Mission Bay Yacht Club sent 15 sailors spread amongst 5 divisions. Sunday was very light showing next to no wind on the water, however through much determination, most sailors found a way to get the boat moving forward. Throughout the day, Mission Bay learned a great deal of the skills it takes to get a boat moving forward in less than 3 knots of wind. In the C3 division, MBYC was represented by Willem Perry, Jon Nasielski and Aydin Newman. Willem Perry and Aydin Newman, two very young sailors had some great races in which Willem placed 2nd in a race and Aydin Newman won his first race ever. Jon showed that he is getting much closer to the C2 division. In the C2 division MBYC was represented by Anska Jordan, Alex Newman, Ian Bellin and Soenke Jordan. The conditions were very light, and Soenke Jordan and Alex Newman were the only ones that finished the only race of the day. Soenke Jordan won by a large margin and is now a C1 sailor! In the C1 division, MBYC was represented by Trenton Austin, Madeline Brownsea, James Trotter, Jameson Perry and Steven Leuck. The C1 division was able to get off two races on Sunday and the fact that all of our sailors were able to finish was very impressive. The 2nd race lasted approximately one and a half hours sailing in less than 3 knots. It was grueling just to watch and I am very proud of all of our sailors for finishing. The C1 division was won by our very own Steven Leuck who now has moved into B division. B division was represented by Trevor Hecht. Trevor Hecht has had a great year so far, placing in almost every one. Trevor had trouble in the light air this weekend and ended up placing 4th. In A division MBYC had Alex Ranum and Kate Rakelly. A division sailed “painful to watch” races. Alex and Kate did great and ended up placing 3rd and 1st overall respectively. Kate has come on really strong as of late, working very hard on her starts. She has progressed to one of the top kids in A division with incredible speed and starting ability. In the Laser division, MBYC sent Matt Hecht. Matt Hecht had a great day in very tough sailing conditions. Matt placed 2nd in both races sailed and placed 2nd overall against some pretty tough competition. Congratulations to all of our sailors for putting forth a great amount of effort on a tough day.
I would like to mention a sailor that exuded great sportsmanship this weekend. Over the course of Sunday, the Oceanside Yacht Club mixed up the scores and gave Trenton Austin a 4th Place trophy. Trenton knew that he had not sailed well enough that particular day and gave up his trophy to James Trotter, who should have came in 4th place. Trenton showed incredible sportsmanship and if you see him around the club, please let him know that he did something that most kids would not do. Thank you and Congratulations Trenton
MBYC sends 17 Sailors and Wins 3 of the 5 divisions at the Annual Joe Sabot Regatta
Over this past weekend, the Joe Sabot regatta was held at Coronado on Saturday, May 10th. Mission Bay Yacht Club sent one of the largest showings ever to a Sabot event, 17 Sailors, which turned into being a dominant Mission Bay Yacht Club performance. MBYC participants, spread throughout 5 divisions, accounted for 41% of all entries and won 3 of the 5 divisions (C3, C2, B). In the C3 division MBYC had four Junior sailors . Jeremy McCulloch placed 10th and beat his first competition in his young career. Aydin Newman placed 9th and at 7 years of age he is showing great potential. Jon Nasielski placed 5th overall with very consistent finishes ranging from 2nd place to 7th. With 5 bullets, or 1st place finishes, Ansgar Jordan dominated the C3 division the entire regatta, finishing with a total of 7 points. In the C2 division, MBYC had 5 of the 6 sailors and took the top two places. Alex Newman had great starts throughout the regatta and with more practice on straight-line boat speed, he will be up at the top. Winning the first race and placing 5th overall, Cole Baker had a solid regatta despite having a few inconsistent finishes in the middle of the event. Ian Bellin had a good regatta losing a tie for 3rd and ending up in 4th place. With only two races outside the top 4, Ian showed great consistency. In 2nd place, Ryan Ratliffe had another great regatta and is looking like he will continue this throughout the Summer. Winning 5 of the 8 total C2 races, Soenke Jordan was in his element and finished with 9 total points. Soenke Jordan officially made a strong case for C1 division. In the C1 division, Mission Bay Yacht Club had 5 sailors competing. In his first C1 event, Trenton Austin had some great moments sailing very well in a few races. Winning the last race and finally getting comfortable out on the race course, Madeline Brownsea took 6th place overall and proved that she is ready for the challenge. Placing 5th overall and placing 2nd in the first race in his first C1 event, James Trotter showed that he is also ready for the next step in Sabot sailing. Jameson Perry sailed well in the first two races, placing 1st and 3rd, but with an ankle sprain bothering him could not get comfortable. Ryan Hopps, sailing very consistent throughout the regatta with 3 second place finishes, placed 3rd. In B division there was another incredible performance by a MBYC sailor. Trevor Hecht was “SO FAR AHEAD” on some of the races. Winning 3 of the 5 races by a significant margin, Trevor is just waiting for a two day B division regatta to head into the elite class also known as A Division. In A division, Kate Rakelly finished in fine fashion with a 3,2,3 to end the regatta in a positive note in 5th place. In 4th place, Alex Ranum had a great start with a 1,3, but struggled with his conditioning. With a few more push-ups Alex could be looking at a top 3 finish. Congratulations to all of our Sailors for sailing so well in one of the first Spring regattas leading into the intense Summer.

Over this past weekend, Mission Bay Yacht Club held the second part of the two-part April Sabot Showdown series which turned out to be another great success. Over the two-part regatta, MBYC had 14 racers participate in the C-Fleet event. Just last year, Mission Bay Yacht Club had at one time 4 C-fleet racers total. This year, we expect to push that number over 20! The regatta this past weekend was held directly in front of the Yacht Club for all members to see. Over the weekend, we were able to get in 3 races on Saturday and 6 races on Sunday for a total of 9 quality races for all members and kids to enjoy. In 14th place was Ian Bellin. Ian sailed only the first day and had a 9th place as his top finish. Willem Perry finished in 13th place, sailing very well in his 4th regatta of his young career. In 12th place was Jeremy McCulloch, sailing very well as the regatta went on. Aydin Newman placed 11th with a top finish of 8th place. In one race, Aydin was 2nd around the first windward mark, a huge feat for a 7 year-old. In 10th place was Alex Newman, with a top finish of 6th overall. Ryan Ratliffe placed 9th overall and was the top C3 division sailor for the weekend. Say hi to C2 Ryan. Congratulations! In 8th place was Ansgar Jordan, a newcomer to the C2 division, sailed very well with a top finish of 6th place in a race. In 7th place was Cole Baker, who was sick, but was strong and finished every race. In 6th place was James Trotter. James had a great start with a 4,4,2,4,4 and without a DNF and a 9th place could have really made a push for 5th. Soenke Jordan placed 5th overall with very consistent sailing in his new boat. In 4th place was Jameson Perry, the winner of the April Sabot Showdown part 1. Jameson struggled in the light air and had trouble off the starting line. He finished with a 3,1,1,4 to put him in the top 4 for the regatta, however. In third place was Madeline Brownsea, who sailed for the first time in over a month and dominated while losing a tooth and a mast step all in one weekend. Madeline lost a tooth during a race, and instead of sailing in, she completed every race. Congratulations to Maddi for staying out despite some unfortunate occurrences. In second place was Ryan Hopps. With two first place finishes and a very consistent weekend, Ryan placed 2nd overall in the April Sabot Showdown. Winning the second part of the April Sabot Showdown was Steven Leuck. Steven placed outside the top 3 once in 9 races and won the regatta by 5 points. Below are the final results of the April Sabot Showdown. There were a total of 19 races and 14 participants. The sailors and the total points are shown below.

Kevin Laube Places 2nd at High School Qualifiers for Nationals!!
Over this past weekend, Mission Bay Yacht Club had a great showing at the High School Qualifier's for the National Championships held later this year. Kevin Laube sailed A Division for Point Loma High School and had a great event. The team finished in 1st place in large part due to a great regatta by Kevin who placed 2nd behind Chris Barnard of Newport. Kevin Laube is only 15 years of age and is one of our best sailors here at Mission Bay Yacht Club. This is arguably Kevin's most impressive finish as a sailor and is an incredible accomplishment for anyone his age. Congratulations to Kevin Laube for a very impressive finish at the most important regatta of his young and already successfull career.
April Sabot Showdown Part 1 Huge Success!!
Over this past weekend, the Mission Bay Yacht Club Junior Program hosted an “In-House” regatta called the April Sabot Showdown. This is to be a two part series with the first part over this past weekend and the second part to be over the weekend of April 26th-27th. This regatta is intended to not only improve the skills of our sailors by giving them an extra two regattas on the schedule, but to also advertise and promote our new and improved Junior Sailing Program here at Mission Bay Yacht Club. This weekend we had a total of 12 racers out sailing on Mission Bay both Saturday and Sunday in bright sunny skies. Over the course of the weekend, we were able to get off 10 competitive races with a throw-out. All of our young Juniors from the ages of 7-12 sailed very well, mixing it up throughout the weekend to have some very close finishes. Jeremy McCulloch, one of our very young sailors at the age of 7, had a great regatta, finishing his first race ever! Willem Perry, another one of our young Juniors also had a great event sailing within the fleet for the majority of each race. Aydin Newman, whose 7th Birthday was last month, placed 10th overall and finished 9th in one race. Alex Newman sailed a good regatta with two 4th place finishes to round out in 9th place overall. Ryan Ratliffe, who has sailed in the summer but has yet to race an organized event this year, sailed great winning two races and finishing in 8th place overall with 50 points. Ansgar Jordan, one of last months Sailor’s of the Month, was very consistent with a score of 4-7 in every race and ending up in 7th with 49 points. Ryan Hopps, the other Sailor of the Month last month, sailed a decent event winning 3 races and finishing in 6th place overall with 40 points. In 5th place overall was Soenke Jordan, placing 3,2 in the last two races to bump into the 5th place and tying with the 3rd and 4th place finishers with 39 points. James Trotter, sailing his new SHOCK sailed his best regatta of his young career placing 4th with 39 points as well. Cole Baker finished in 3rd place by winning one race and sailed one of his best regattas of the year. In second place was Steven Leuck, sailing very consistent outside of two bad races finishing with 30.6 points. The winner of the first part of the April Sabot Showdown was Jameson Perry who won 3 races and placed out of the top 5 only once the entire weekend. Thank you and Congratulations to all the C Fleet Sailors at Mission Bay Yacht Club. Special thanks goes to James Perry for lending his boat as well as Gene Ratliffe for helping in a kayak along with Carsten Jordan. All your help is truly appreciated.
SCRA also had some great racing going on in the other half of the bay in which a number of our Juniors sailed. Congratulations to Jon Real, Alex Ranum, Matt Morris and Olin Paine for going out for some extra practice and showing support to SCRA
Ansgar Jordan, 7 years old, Finishes in 6th Place Overall at Combined C Fleet Manning Regatta!!
This past weekend Mission Bay Yacht Club attended the 4th part of the Shadden Series and the Annual Manning Regatta held at Alamitos Bay Yacht Club. MBYC had 5 teams representing the club. The wind was light and shifty the first day getting off 4 races. The second day started with moderate breeze and quickly built to 15 to 18 knots. The team of Kate Rakelly and Colleen Hackett sailed very well in their first official regatta sailing with each other. Kate and Colleen’s scores were very consistent in the high teens and low 20’s and finished in 23rd overall. This team had a great first regatta in a double-handed boat. The team of Alex Ranum and Tyler Caroe sailed decent in their 3rd regatta together. A top finish of 12th put them 22nd overall. Matt Hecht and Duncan from San Diego Yacht Club sailed incredible in their first double-handed event of the year. Matt turned in his best finish since graduating from the Sabot class. With a 9th place in the last race, Matt and Duncan finished in 20th overall and ended the weekend on a great note. Scott Hoffman and Dillon House had a great regatta sailing very consistent until the last race where they placed 24th. Scott and Dillon finished 12th overall only 7 points out of the top ten. Evan Hoffman and Cragan Smith sailed very fast all weekend with only 2 races out of the top 10. They placed 6th overall out of 33 boats. Congratulations to all of our double-handed sailors.
The Manning Regatta was very competitive in the C combined C class division where MBYC had 8 of the 23 sailors. Aydin Newman had a great second regatta beating 5 boats to the windward mark in his 4th race. Aydin finished in 22nd overall. James Trotter finished in 15th place. In his second race, James was 3rd to the windward mark after winning for much of the first leg. Alex Newman placed 13th out of the 23 C class boats with a 4th place in the third race. Alex is continuing to improve with every regatta he sails. Jameson Perry finished in 9th overall struggling with boat to boat tactics. Jameson was routinely first off the line and in the top 3 for most of the races. With improvement in boat to boat tactics he will once again be at the top of his fleet. Soenke Jordan finished in 8th place having a rough second day of racing. His first day of racing shows that he belongs at the top of his fleet. Ansgar Jordan, 7 years old, finished in 6th place overall sailing the best regatta he has ever had. Ansgar, a C3 sailor, beat a number of C1 sailors and all of the C2 sailors as well. This was a prime example of sailing up to your competition. Steven Leuck, after a month off, finished in 5th place overall and continued to get better throughout the regatta, finishing with a 2,5,3. Ryan Hopps had an outstanding regatta placing 4th and the top MBYC finisher. He has shown that he is not only ready for being a C1 sailor, but ready to dominate as well. Congratulations to all of our sailors for representing Mission Bay Yacht Club well.
Mission Bay Yacht Club Sweeps C2 division at Sabot Midwinters!!
Over the weekend of February 16th and 17th, Mission Bay Yacht Club competed in two separate Midwinter’s Events. The MBYC Junior Race Team sent 4 Junior Sailors to the Laser Radial Midwinters held at MBYC. Matt Hecht sailed just Saturday and finished in 6th place out of 8 racers. Jay Sanchioli had one of his best days of the year placing 4th with a 3rd place in race four. Olin Paine placed 3rd overall in the Laser Radial Division and Charlotte Hughes placed 2nd and top girl in the Laser Radial Division. In the Snipe division, Evan Hoffman crewed for Doug Hart and placed 4th overall.
The NHYC Sabot Midwinters were also held on Feb. 16th and 17th in which Mission Bay Yacht Club had 10 sailors racing. MBYC had a great turnout at this regatta and sailed quite well in every fleet. The Sabot C3 division was made up of 6 competitors, 3 of which were from MBYC. Aydin Newman, our prized 6 year old, sailed his 2nd regatta of the year and finished his first race. Ansgar Jordan sailed very well once again and placed 3rd. Alex Newman continues to improve and finished in 2nd place, two points out of 1st place. The C2 division was well represented by MBYC, comprised of half the racers in the division. James Trotter sailed very well despite boat troubles finishing in 8th place. Trenton Austin finished in 4th place after leading going into the second day of the event. Soenke Jordan placed 3rd overall after a consistent two days of racing. Cole Baker sailed very well throughout the regatta placing 2nd by one point to fellow MBYC teammate Ryan Hopps. Ryan Hopps won the C2 division after making corrections to his mast rake after the first day. Ryan went out on Sunday and won every race, jumping 4 places, and winning the event. Jameson Perry represented MBYC in the C1 division, finding out very quickly that moving into the C1 division isn’t quite as easy as he thought it would be. Jameson started slow but got more comfortable as the regatta went along. Jameson finished with a top finish of 3rd place while rounding out in 6th place overall. Alex Ranum had another great regatta in A division sailing fast and smart. Going into the last race Alex was currently in 3rd place with a throw-out. If not for an unfortunate happening at the start line in the last race, Alex more than likely would have placed. Congratulations to all of our sailors for representing Mission Bay Yacht Club well and bringing home the majority of the trophy’s that were given out.
Mission Bay Yacht Club also sent a representative to the 420 Midwinters in Martin County, Florida. The team of Kevin Laube and Jake Reynolds finished 7th out of 76 competitors. Kevin and Jake finished the regatta with top five finishes in 5 of the last 6 races. Congratulations to all of our racers over the weekend.
MBYC Sends Record Number 26 Different Sailors to SDAYC Luffin #1
The SDAYC Luffin #1 held at Southwestern Yacht Club over the weekend of February 9-10th turned out to be a great success. Saturday, February 9th, was the Double Handed Luffin in which Mission Bay Yacht Club sent 4 teams of 420’s and 1 Team of CFJ’s. Saturday began with multiple postponements due to the lack of wind however filling in quite nicely at around 2pm. The breeze was between 5-12kts allowing a few of our sailors to trapeze for the first time. Alex Ranum and Trevor Hecht, sailing for the first time together, sailed progressively better throughout the day concentrating mainly on Spinnaker and trapeze work. The team of Evan Hoffman and Cragan Smith struggled with their starts in a large part due to the current flowing down the line towards the favored pin end. Scott Hoffman and Dylan House sailed very consistent throughout the day and if it weren’t for a 7th place in the first race they would have been in the top 3. The team of Olin Paine and Charlotte Hughes had their best day of the year, winning 4 of the 5 races, and winning the Double Handed 420 Luffin. Olin and Charlotte are sailed very well and their chemistry and boathandling get better each with they step onto the boat. The Team of Kate Rakelly and Colleen Hackett represented Mission Bay in the CFJ fleet. Kate and Colleen sailed very fast and smart and without a few boathandling errors they would be a much more consistent and dominating double handed team.
The SDAYC Single Handed Luffin held on Sunday was another success. MBYC was represented by 16 sabot sailors in every division for the first time in years. The breeze again on Sunday did not show up until around 1:30pm, however filling in quite nicely turned out to be a great day for racing. The C3 fleet was represented by 6 sailors, four of which are under the age of 8 years old. Aydin Newman, Jeremy McCulloch and Willem Perry sailed their first sabot regatta and each did a great job. Due to the moderate wind and lack of body weight, sailing was quite difficult for the young gentlemen. Willem Perry stuck it out and reefed his sail and ended up finishing the last 3 races of the day and made his parents and coach very proud. We officially have 3 new racers on the team. Alex Newman, sailing without a bailer, had a hard time with water in his boat the first two races and had to sail in and drain the boat. The following 3 races Alex finished 2,4,3 and showed that he belongs at the top of the C3 division. Jon Nasielski sailed a very consistent regatta finishing in 5th place. MBYC’s top finisher in the C3 division was 7 1/2 year-old Ansgar Jordan who finished in 3rd place out of 12. In the C2 division, MBYC was represented by 6 sabot sailors all of which had great moments on the water. Madeline Brownsea, sailing her first regatta of the year, had a great first race placing 4th and winning the start. James Trotter had a great second race placing 4th but had boat troubles and rounded out 8th place overall. Trenton Austin also sailed his first regatta of the year and won a race finishing in 7th overall. Soenke Jordan sailed his first C2 regatta and placed 6th overall. Ryan Hopps had consistency problems with finishes of 2,9,3,9,5 placing 4th. With more practice Ryan will fix the consistency issues and progress into C1. Cole Baker had his best day as a sabot sailor, finishing his day with a 4, 1, and placing 3rd overall in the C2 division. The C1 division was represented by Jameson Perry and Steven Lueck. Steven twisted his ankle before the first race of the day and could not sail the rest of the day. Jameson Perry sailed in his fist C1 regatta and placed 7th overall with a 3rd place finish in the second race. Trevor Hecht had a good day with a 1st and a 3rd in two of the races and placed 5th overall. When Trevor puts everything together he is no doubt the most dominant B division sailor. Alex Ranum represented MBYC in A division and sailed a very good regatta and finished the regatta in 5th place. The conditions for the Single handed Luffin were very difficult and our team handled the weather very well. Congratulations to all of our sailors and especially those that raced for the first time.
Mission Bay Yacht Club Finishes Second at Perry Series ¾
The weekend of February 2nd and 3rd was the 3rd part of the Perry Series held in club 420’s. This past weekend, MBYC was represented by 3 teams, two of which are just beginning their double-handed career. The teams were Alex Ranum and Tyler Caroe, Olin Paine and Charlotte Hughes, and Kevin Laube sailing with San Diego Yacht Club team member Jake Reynolds. On Saturday, the breeze was light and shifty, oscillating 15-20 degrees in each direction. Sunday was equally as difficult in other ways, raining heavily and blowing 15-23 knots throughout the day. Alex Ranum and Tyler Caroe had a rough couple days sailing together in their first full Double-handed event finishing 24th out of 29 boats. This was in large part due to the timing and boat-handling of the 420. Olin Paine and Charlotte Hughes sailed their first full 420 event together sailing very well at times. Timing was again a concern for this team; however, by Sunday they were sailing very well in overpowering conditions. This team has a very bright future sailing together and should have very impressive finishes throughout the year as they sail more and more together. Mission Bay Yacht Club’s Kevin Laube had a rough start to the event, beginning his regatta with a 6, 10 but finally was able to get consistent finishing the regatta with a 4,2,2,4,3 with a combined score of 21 points with a throwout. Kevin and Jake are finally gelling together and look like one of the top teams to beat in Southern California. At the PCISA Socal #4 ABYC Matt Hecht placed 1st in his second High School event. Congratulations to all our Mission Bay Yacht Club Sailors as well as Jake Reynolds who is currently sailing with Kevin Laube.
Harold Adams Team Race
Over this past weekend, January 26th and 27th, Mission Bay Yacht Club sent teams to two one day events. January 26th was the 3rd part of the Shadden Series which, in short, was canceled due to lack of wind. The second regatta, the Harold Adams Team Race, was held on the 27th, and Mission Bay Yacht Club sent a 3 boat team which featured Olin Paine and Charlotte Hughes, Alex Ranum and Matt Hecht, Kate Rakelly and Colleen, and a reserve crew by the name of Katie Everett from Coronado Yacht Club. The majority of the sailors are the defending champions of the Dick Sweet Team Race and our elite sabot sailors at Mission Bay Yacht Club. The Regatta was held at San Diego Yacht Club that had winds gusting to 18 knots creating very difficult sailing conditions for our young and still very light competitors. The team struggled throughout the day with boathandling and timing issues, in large part due to the fact that this will be their first full year in double-handed boats. Nonetheless, each and every sailor learned a great deal and was able to get much more practice in high wind conditions. Mission Bay had a few other representatives on other teams as well. Cragan Smith, the reigning women’s sailor of the year for Mission Bay Yacht Club sailed with her High School Team Race team. Kevin Laube also represented Mission Bay Yacht Club in fine fashion competing on the winning team which one every race sailed. Congratulations to all of our sailors this weekend as well as Katie Everett from Coronado Yacht Club who was a huge asset for our race team! Results will be posted as soon as they are developed
Mission Bay Junior's Place 3rd at ISAF World Qualifier's
January 19-21st was another great weekend for the Mission Bay Yacht Club Junior Program. There were two events that took place over the weekend. The first and most important event was the US ISAF World Qualifiers held at Alamitos Bay Yacht Club. The World Qualifiers was a 3 day event that went from Saturday through Friday with 10 races sailed. MBYC sent 3 teams of 6 sailors. Kevin Laube and Jake Reynolds ended up in 9th place with their top finish of 4th in the 8th race. Evan Hoffman and Chloe Mcdonald finished in a very competitive 5th place. Evan and Chloe were incredibly consistent in which 7 of their 10 races were either 4th or 5th place finishes. Our top team of Scott Hoffman and Ryan Porteous finished in 3rd place. Scott and Ryan sailed a great regatta consistently in the top of the fleet showing off they’re multi-hull experience. Congratulations to all our Juniors at the US ISAF World Qualifiers.
Our second regatta sailed over the weekend was the Sabot Winter Series Regatta held at San Diego Yacht Club on Saturday the 19th. The Winter Series consists of 2 one day regattas in which the second part of the series will be held on February 24th. Mission Bay Yacht Club sent a total of 7 sailors, all of which had great races. In the C3 division, we had Alex Newman and Ansgar Jordan. Alex Newman was back for his second regatta of the year and finished in 5th place. Ansgar Jordan, MBYC’s youngest racer, ended up in 3rd place and doesn’t seem too far from the C2 division. In the C2 division, Mission Bay Yacht Club sent 4 Juniors all of which sailed very competitively. James Trotter finished in 7th place having a difficult time with starts in his second C2 event. Cole Baker finished in 5th place sailing much better and faster than his first C2 event. Jameson Perry and Steven Leuck finished in 2nd and 3rd respectively. Steven had a rough start to the regatta getting a 6th in the first race, but fought back with three consecutive 2nd place finishes to end the regatta on a high note. Jameson Perry sailed very well throughout the day in his second C2 event showing us all he has no plans in staying in the C2 division much longer. Our top finisher of the day was Trevor Hecht who represented MBYC in B division while winning every race. A and B division were combined due to a small turnout, however, Trevor sailed very competitive with the A division sailors as well beating them on several occasions. Congratulations to all over our Juniors this weekend. It is truly great to see every weekend our sailors sailing better and better.
Junior Invitational January 12-13 at SDYC
With a total of 86 boats the Junior Invitational Regatta is one of the biggest Sabot races of the winter. Mission Bay Yacht Club sent a total of 12 boats to the invitational with all boats having a good regatta. The first day of racing was a light and shifty day. The wind never got above 4 knots and never really decided to pick a direction to blow. The second day started the same but this time with a 1 ½ hour postponement (during which all of the kids, parents, race committee, and coaches watched the Charger game). At about 1:45 pm the wind all of a sudden picked up to 10+ knots and it was race time. With the breeze up, there were a couple of breakdowns and capsizes. All in all it was a good regatta for us. In the A fleet Alex Ranum placed 3rd out of 30 boats with 3 fourth place finishes and 2 second place finishes out of 7 races. Kate Rakelly also had a good regatta finishing in 11th place with 3 top ten finishes. Congratulations to Steven Leuck for winning the C2 fleet! He had dominating performance with all top 5 finishes. Coming in behind him in 4th place was Jameson Perry. He started the regatta off strong with a second place finish in the first race and also getting another top 5 finish later in the regatta. Ryan Hopps had a great second day with a pair of fourth place finishes moving him up from 11th place to 5th place in two races. Ian Bellin sailed a very consistent regatta by finishing in the top ten in every race and ending up in 9th place. James Trotter had a great first day but had a hard time keeping his boat upright in the big wind and fell to 12th. Cole Baker had a hard time in the light wind and didn’t sail the last day and finished 14th. Congratulations to Soenke Jordan for winning the C3 fleet! He got no worse than a 4th place in all 5 races and won by a total of 8 points. John Nasielski got two top 5 finishes and ended up in 7th place. Ansgar Jordan and Alex Newman finished up 9th and 10th in the C3 fleet to complete their 3rd regatta each. Great job to all of the competitors and see you all at the next regatta!
2007 SDAYC Winter Sabot and Laser Clinic
This past week we held a Sabot and Laser clinic here at MBYC. We had some of the best coaches in the Southern California area to attend the clinic to provide their knowledge. These coaches included Adam Roberts, Tyler Sinks (combined 2 Sabot National Championships), George Saunders, and Briana Provancha for the Sabots. The Sabot clinic was held on the 2nd and 3rd of the month and a total of 18 boats attended. The clinic had various drills performed by the coaches and we had a round robin system set up so that everyone had a chance to be with every coach. Thank you to Trevor Hecht, Steven Leuck, Jameson Perry, and Ryan Hopps for attending the clinic during their school break.
For the Lasers David Hochart and Caleb Paine were the coaches. The Laser clinic was held on the 3rd and 4th of January. A total of 11 boats attended; 7 from MBYC! Great turn out! There was one day for inside practice and the other was outside in the ocean. Thank you for all attending and hopefully this will be the first of many clinics to come.
Junior Commodore’s Regatta
The Mission Bay Junior Program had one of the most impressive showings of the year Nov. 3 and 4th at the annual Junior Commodore’s Regatta. From Race Committee on down to the sailors themselves, Mission Bay Yacht Club made a statement of excellence holding 7 top five finishes in 4 fleets sailed (Not to mention placing 1st in Laser Radials). Beginning with the C3 division, Mission Bay Yacht Club made several improvements across the fleet. We had newcomers to the junior program John Nasielski and James Trotter place 14th and 13th respectively, however, showing great potential for their future in Sabots. 7-year-old Ansgar Jordan finished in 9th place while finishing strong in 4th place in the final race. Cole Baker has steadily improved his consistency out on the course and if not for a few minor setbacks he would have placed much higher than the final result of a 7th place finish. Jameson Perry came back very strong with a 5th place finish and if not for two DNF’s due to capsizing and getting cold he easily would have ended up in 3rd place. Soenke Jordan was the star in the C3 class for MBYC sailing very consistent and placing second only to a much older sailor. With a total of 13 total points in 10 races he showed us all what 8 year olds are capable of.
The C2 division was represented by 5 MBYC juniors who also made consistent improvements to impress their coach. Ian Bellin had a rough weekend due very tough winds sailed every race and had a reefed mainsail just so he could continue sailing. With any other conditions I would fully expect Ian to be at the top of the C2 division. Madeline Brownsea had a nice start to the regatta placing 6th 9th and 8th in consecutive races in a very deep C2 division finishing in 13th place overall. Trenton Austin made huge improvements sitting on the rail, sitting forward in his boat and NOT cleating his main to make a huge jump to 7th overall in C2. Ryan Hopps had a great regatta as well placing 6th while sailing a new boat for the first time. If not for a slow start Ryan would also be mentioned in the top 5 in C2. Steven Leuck had his most impressive regatta of the year sailing to a 5th place finish in C2. With two 2nd place finishes to end the regatta we can expect good things to come in the upcoming Turkey Day Regatta Nov 17th and 18th.
In the 32 boat Sabot A division fleet we had Kate Rakelly and Alex Ranum representing MBYC. With very difficult conditions Kate Rakelly could just not get comfortable and finished in 20th place. Alex Ranum had a great regatta finishing in 2nd only to the reigning Junior Sabot National Champion Jake Ladow.
Finally, in Laser Radials we had 12 juniors representing MBYC. Dillon House, Jay Sanchioli, Jon Real, Tyler Caroe and Scott Porteous had a very difficult time on Saturday in the big breeze. These are our very young Radial Sailors that have great potential in the future. Matt Hecht finished in 15th place in radials with a 7th place finish as well as a 6th to finish the regatta. Matt is a graduating Sabot A division sailor that will only get better. Ryan Porteous finished in 12th place having a very strong second half of the event. Charlotte Hughes fought the big breeze on Saturday to finish as the top girl in 10th overall. If not for a few bad races she could have easily been upwards of 7th. Olin Paine is another graduated Sabot A division Sailor that has much promise. Throughout the regatta Olin made improvements and finished in 9th place overall. Our top three radial sailors fought it out to the finish in what was a very suspenseful finish. Evan Hoffman ended up in 4th in a large part due to a red flag. Scott Hoffman and Kevin Laube separated by a mere 2 points finished the day in 1st and 2nd, Respectively. Congratulations to Scott Hoffman for Winning the Laser Radial event.
On behalf of the Junior Program, I would like to thank all of the parents and members that helped run the regatta. The Races ran smooth throughout the weekend and we could not have done it without you. Sincerely, Jack Kerr
Corinthian Cup Rundown
This past weekend was a great regatta at BCYC with 420's, FJ's, Lasers, and Sabots represented. MBYC was represented by 6 sailors in 3 fleets. Scott and Evan Hoffman, Matt Hecht and Jay Sancholi sailed in the laser fleet which consisted of around 8 boats. Evan Hoffman won the regatta with Scott Hoffman close behind in 2nd. Matt Hecht and Jay Sancholi sailed well despite having limited experience in Lasers. Trevor Hecht sailed to a mid fleet finish in Sabot B division having trouble in the light and shifty breeze. Alex Ranum finished in 4th place having trouble with the light and shifty breeze as well. Great job to all the sailors this weekend in very difficult sailing conditions.
Shadden 2/4
This past weekend at Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club was the second regatta of four in Shadden series. Representing MBYC was Scott Hoffman/Clair Bagg , Evan Hoffman/Tyler Caroe, Kevin Laube/Reese Bernet, and Alex Ranum/Akane Nakagaki. There was 40 boats that showed up for this second Shadden. The first race was quite an interesting race with a 180 degree shift halfway through the race with no breeze. Kevin Laube ended up 1st that race followed closely by Scott Hoffman in second. During the second race the breeze was light but steady. By the last race it was blowing 16+ and pretty shifty. Kevin Laube ended up second overall Scott hoffman 18th, Alex Ranum 20th and Evan Hoffman 31st. Great job this weekend!
Shadden 1/4 Rundown
The first of four Shadden CFJ reggattas was hosted by NHYC this past weekend. MBYC sent three teams Evan Hoffmann/Cragan Smith, Scott Hoffmann/Dillon House, and Alex Ranum/Tyler Caroe. Due to heavy fog the first day racing was postponed an hour until it cleared. The clearing was only temporary and mid way through the first upwind leg of the first race it came back in shutting the wind off. After an hour postponment racing was canceled for the day. The second day's weather cooperated more than the first's. The fog stayed off but light shifty winds prevailed. Three races were run with sporadic set of finishes for the MBYC team. Alex Ranum and Tyler Caroe lead the MBYC group taking 7th with Evan Hoffmann and Cragan Smith close behind in 8th. Scott Hoffmann and Dylan House took 13th out of the 45 boat fleet. Nevan Snow and recent MBYC Sabot graduate Matt Hecht took 17th. It was great to see all our sailors finish in the top half and hopefully with more races and consistent breeze they can all crack the top five.
Fall Gold Cup
This past weekend at the Fall Gold Cup, we had a total of 5 sabots attend from MBYC. In the A fleet we had Olin Payne and Kate Rakelly, B fleet Trevor Hecht, C2 fleet Ryan Hopps, and in C3 fleet Cole Baker. The first day was very light and shifty due to the fog that would come in and out all day. The second day was better with a good steady breeze that stayed strong all day. Olin Payne finshed a close second only losing by 1 point and Kate Rakelly had a great second day moving up 8 spots from the first day to 11th. Trevor Hecht also had a good second day with a 2nd and a 3rd in concecutive races to move from 27th to 13th out of the 36 boat fleet. Ryan Hopps did well out of the 20 boat fleet with a couple of top 10 finishes and ending up in 16th place. Cole Baker got a 5th and 6th in two of the races but couldn't finish the last race and ended up in 10 overall.

Sabot Nationals
August 6th-9th was the 2007 Jr Sabot National Championship held in Newport Harbor, California. Mission Bay Yacht Club had a great week, featuring 5 sailors in 3 different fleets. Trevor Hecht, an eleven year old who is no doubt our future in sabots, took 26th in bronze fleet. The 26th, however, doesn’t do him justice. Trevor went out and won the 4th race of the regatta and showed that he is a sailor to look for in the future. In Silver fleet we had Matt Hecht and Kate Rakelly. Matt showed great consistency leading up to the sabot nationals in the qualification regatta placing 3rd overall out of around 120 boats. Matt was challenged in the silver fleet due to the fact the he has a little too much muscle for the boat. Matt was no doubt one of the heavier boats but pulled out a 2nd in the sixth race and 22nd overall. Kate Rakelly came on strong in the silver fleet late in the regatta to finish 14th after having a slow start. Mission Bay was represented by Olin Paine and Alex Ranum in the Gold Fleet, each having very high expectations. Alex finished in 16th place out of 31 to round out a decent regatta. If Alex can ever get consistent he could easily be one of the best sailors in San Diego. Finally, Olin Paine led the charge for Mission Bay sailing a great regatta and finishing in 2nd overall. If it wasn’t for a few inconsistent finishes we could be easily be talking about the sabot national champion. In the Consolation Series, Ian Bellin represented the club very well, placing 6th out of 40 boats. The 2007 Jr Sabot Nationals was a great event where Mission Bay Yacht Club represented themselves very well. All our sailors have had a great year individually and collectively. Congratulations to everyone!

MBYC wins the Dick Sweet Sabot Team Race Series for the First Time in Club History
On Monday July 23 team MBYC sailed the third and final Dick Sweet Regatta. After qualifying for the finals in the first two regattas, MBYC went on to sail in a best of three race elimination against Lido Island Yacht Club. MBYC then moved on to race against SDYC in a best of five final elimination. The team of Olin Paine, Kate Rakelly, and Alex Ranum sailed a great regatta. Matt Hecht also deserves credit as he was the third sailor at the first Dick Sweet and helped the team qualify for the finals. The team worked hard, practicing several times in the months leading up to the event under the guidance of coach Jack Kerr. Congratulations to all those who were involved.
Mid Summer Update
Team MBYC has had a busy summer so far. Sabot, Laser, FJ, and 420 sailors have been involved in a marathon of events. Some highlights have been Olin Paine's first and Alex Ranum's 6th place, out of 40 boats, at NHYC Summer Gold Cup. Evan Hoffmann, Scott Hoffmann, and Eric Alamillo qualified for the Sears cup final with all first places at the qualifier against three other teams. The team race team of Matt Hecht, Olin Paine, Kate Rakelly, and Alex Ranum have made it to the final four of the Dick Sweet and will race on Monday the 23rd in Newport for the championship. Our sailors who went to the Junior Olympics did great. Evan Hoffmann took first in the Laser radial division, which had 44 boats, Kevin Laube took fifth and Scott Hoffmann 12. Jon Real sailed his first regatta holding his own in the 44 boat fleet. Alex Ranum and Cragan Smith took fourth in the CFJ division and Olin Paine and Eric Cibit finished 5th in 420s. Many of our younger sailors also made it out to the Sabot II South. Trenton Austin and Maddi Brownsea finished mid fleet against several A and B division sailors. Ryan Ratliffe and Alex Newman both had a great time in their first and second regatta respectively.
MBYC takes first in four divisions at the Fourth Luff In
This past weekend MBYC hosted the 4th Luff In Regatta. The first day Kevin Laube took 1st in 420 with his crew Jake Reynolds, the two placed first in every race but one. Evan Hoffmann and Cragan Smith came in second. The second day of racing was another great day for MBYC. In the Laser Radial division MBYC took four of the top five spots with Scott Hoffmann finishing first, Evan Hoffmann second, Kevin Laube third and Charlotte Hughes fifth, the top woman. Tyler Caroe sailed his first regatta making great improvements throughout the day. Christian Gerstoft and Dylan House also improved with several mid fleet finishes. In Sabot A division Olin Paine won by ten points and Alex Ranum came in fourth only four points out of second.
dddddd The C3 and C2 divisions for MBYC went considerably well. Trenton Austin and Ian Bellin represented Mission Bay Yacht Club in C2. This was the first time for both sailors in C2 and each had top 5 finishes to be proud of. Trenton ended up in 8th place, and if not for a mix up with the restricted start finish line, he would have wound up in mid-fleet. Ian Bellin finished in 9th place overall and if not for a minor knee scrape that kept him out of a race, he would have finished in mid-fleet as well. Not bad for the first time in the C2 division. In the C3 division, Mission Bay Yacht Club had 6 out of the 8 racers led by Steven Leuck. Steven won 3 out of the 5 races and finished with 7 total points. Needless to say we will be seeing him in the C2 division next time out. Soenke Jordan and Cole Baker each had very impressive days finishing in 3rd and 4th place respectively. Soenke had a very consistent day outside of the 8th place finish and has shown consistent improvement over the last 3 Luff Ins. Cole had a great last half of the day to pull within 4 points of 3rd place. If not for the rusty start, Cole would have easily finished in the top 3. Kirsten Miller, Nick Francis and Ansgar Jordan all had solid races throughout the day to be happy with and will definitely be competing for the top positions in the C3 class in the coming regattas.
wwwwA big thanks to our coaches Jack Kerr and Chris Wright who helped lead our sailors to their top finishes. Another big thanks to all the parent volunteers who helped with registration, lunches, starts, and finishes. Everyone did a great job making it a very successful regatta thank you.
MBYC Luff In Singlehanded Scores
MBYC Luff In Doublehanded Scores
MBYC sailors sail great in big breeze at the annual Joe Sabot Regatta The Joe Sabot Regatta held Saturday, May 12 was an exciting test for all our juniors. The Joe Sabot was a unique regatta where the first race was a course that started in Coronado Bay and ended in South Bay. The breeze continued to fill in and increase to upwards of 18 knots. MBYC had 2 A division sailors and one B division sailor participating in the event. Trevor Hecht in B division had a frustrating day capsizing four times. He was, however, winning or in the top 3 in all his races before he flipped. Kate Rakelly ended up in fourth place sailing a very smart regatta in difficult conditions. Kate was by far the lightest one in A division. Olin Paine ended up in second place, only 1 point out of first. The regatta came down to the third race where Matt Morris, the regatta winner, took second, while Olin took third. The Joe Sabot regatta turned out to be a great regatta for all of our juniors and a great event to watch for the parents and coaches.
MBYC's fielded four C3 sailors for the Joe Sabot. Madeline Brownsea sailed an impressive regatta finishing in the top five. For Cole Baker, Ansgar Jordan and Soenke Jordan the Joe Sabot was their first regatta. All three fought big breeze to stay out on the course. Soenke went on to take fifth place while Cole and Ansgar sailed as hard as they could for three races. It was great to see our new racers out on the water and we are looking forward to seeing them in the future. Be sure to check out photos from the event with the photo link above. Results will be posted shortly.
Opening Day on the Bay
Opening Day on the Bay took place Saturday April 21 and it went great. The Junior board was well prepared and helpful as were all the parents involved. Trenton Austin and Ian Bellin won first place for the Sabot Beach review by the Staff commodores. Fleet Captain Olin Paine organized a great sail by in front of the club with two doublehanded boats and a Laser. The annual Burgee Sabot Race took place after the firing of the cannon at the closure of the opening day ceremonies. It was a close race with Trenton Austin, Ian Bellin, Soenke Jordan, and Jameson Perry exchanging first place for most of it. Jameson Perry won in the end by a hair with Ian Bellin in a very close second. The weather cooperated and it was a great day. As always it was good to see all the juniors down at the club.
NHYC Gold Cup Review
The Newport Harbor Sabot Gold regatta turned out to be a fun and very competitive event. Mission Bay sent a total of six kids representing 3 different fleets, all of which sailed well considering the shifty Newport Harbor conditions. In A fleet we had Matt Hecht finishing in 29th place, having a top finish of 15th. Kate Rakelly, due to a few inconsistencies and an unfortunate protest finished in 15th place. In 3rd place, and 1 point out of first was Mission Bay’s Olin Paine, who at one point was winning the regatta. In B division we had Trevor Hecht who had a great showing and rounded out in 2nd place, only 4 points out of first. In the C3 division, Ryan Hopps and Steven Leuck had great finishes. Steven and Ryan took 2 of the top 3 spots with Ryan taking first and Steven third. All in all, the regatta was incredibly fun and had desirable wind conditions. Again, it was a regatta where each sailor showed great skill and incredible potential for the coming summer.
MBYC Powers Through Two Big Weekends
Over the past few weekends the Mission Bay Yacht Club juniors have had good competitive sailing that again showed promise for this coming summer. The weekend of March 3rd and 4th was the Shadden Regatta that totaled 42 CFJ’s. MBYC sent 4 teams that all finished in the top 30 mainly due to the fact that there were winds topping 25 knots on Saturday. MBYC struggled in the heavy winds on Saturday but excelled on Sunday with light to moderate breeze. The team of Charlotte Hughes and Ryan Lee finished 28th by the end of the regatta, having sailed good competitive races. The team of Scott Hoffmann and Dylan Hous had a much better Sunday finishing with a 12th and two 10th’s to round out the regatta on a high note in 19th place. Evan Hoffmann and Cragan Smith had a great Sunday as well with a 9th, 7th and a 6th to finish the regatta in 14th place. Finally, our top finishers were Kevin Laube and Alex Ranum who did superb Sunday with a 2nd 9th and a 5th to round out the regatta in 7th position overall. Although the sailors had a rough time on Saturday, they not only showed that they do not give up, but that they are a force in the moderate to light breeze. Again, this regatta was a definite success and is showing to everyone that we are growing stronger every week.
This past weekend was another great regatta for MBYC. On Saturday MBYC had 3 teams that attended and all had great practice for the coming weeks. The juniors all sailed in the 420 fleet which had 6 boats and great breeze. For a few teams it was the first time crewing in 420’s where they were getting used to trapeze harnesses and a much larger boat. All in all the juniors had a great time and learned a great deal throughout the day. The second day was for the Sabots and Lasers. Mission Bay had 7 sailors in Sabots and 4 sailors in Lasers. The conditions ranged from 0 to about 18 knots throughout Sunday for an interesting day of sailing. The racing was the first time for a few in certain fleets and most importantly was great practice on the whole for the entire team. One standout sailor for Mission Bay was Trevor Hecht who moved from C1 to B fleet that day and ended up winning the event outright by a good margin. Results are posted above.
First Luff In of the Year
The weekend of February 10th and 11th was the first of the annual Luff In Regattas hosted by Southwestern Yacht Club. This was a two day event that saw 3 420 teams from MBYC compete on Saturday with even more sailors Sailing in the singlehanded event Sunday. On Saturday, it was for the most part the first or second regatta in double-handed boats for our MBYC juniors. The day started out with heavy winds that contained huge puffs that gave the juniors great practice for the summer ahead. The teams of Olin Paine and Matt Hecht, Kate Rakelly and Brandi Nojd, and Carlton Bartlett and Jay Sanchioli sailed very competitively, however the focus was boat-handling. Every week the juniors are getting more comfortable in the 420’s and Fj’s and it will only be a matter of time until they are competing with the top of the fleet. The second day of the Luff In was cold and raining but still a great day for the kids to sail. The conditions were again difficult having to sail in La Playa cove with inconsistent breeze all day. The juniors showed at times that they have what it takes to compete with the best, but were really hurt with their starting positions. Three of MBYC’s radial sailors placed in the top ten out of twenty boats including Scott Hoffmann in 7th, Evan Hoffmann in 6th and Kevin Laube in 3rd. It was great to see such a large turn out of Lasers. Olin Paine came out in second place in the A Sabots. Trenton Austin also had a great event finishing third in his fleet. MBYC junior Alex Ranum was sailing in the annual St. Petersburg exchange in Florida where he and other local sailors placed very well in a fleet of more than forty boats. The coming practices will be heavily focused on starting so we can have even starts, and sail consistently throughout the coming events. Congratulations to all.
Double Handed Madness
Over the weekend of January 28th and 29th, Mission Bay Yacht Club competed in two very competitive events and showed they are a yacht club that is going to be very competitive now and in the future. The regatta held on Saturday was the 3rd Shadden event of the season. 5 races were sailed in conditions that ranged from 5-12 knots that turned out to be perfect conditions for our sailors. MBYC brought 6 teams to the Shadden in which 3 teams finished in the top ten. The teams of Evan Hoffmann and Cragan Smith, Kevin Laube and Alex Ranum, and Scott Hoffmann and Claire Bagg sailed very consistently throughout the day continually appearing in the top 5. Scott and Claire finished in 10th place showing that with a little more practice together they could easily be in the top 5. Kevin and Alex got off to a slow but finished with two 2nds to finish the day in commanding fashion and end up in 6th place. Evan Hoffmann and Cragan Smith sailed a great regatta and without a minor slipup could have won the regatta. Evan and Cragan tied for 3rd but lost the tie-breaker to finish in 4th. The team of Charlotte Hughes and Ryan Lee had great races especially for the first leg. Charlotte and Ryan were continually up in near the top of the fleet rounding the first mark. Maintaining position throughout the regatta proved to be a struggle but nonetheless they showed they can be competitive in the top of the fleet as well. Olin Paine and Matt Hecht learned an incredible amount over the weekend with the FJ. Two young sabot sailors having one of their first regattas in a FJ ended up rounding the first mark in second in one of the races. They ended up in 28th position but everyone knows they only way they are going is up. Carlton Bartlett and Jay Sanchioli finished in 40th position after the 5 races. Carlton and Jay had a good regatta learning from one of the best FJ fleets in the US. They showed incredible persistence and grit throughout the day. The Second day of racing was the Harold Adams Team Race which was sailed in light to moderate conditions later in the day. Unfortunately the round robin was unable to be completed but MBYC was able to sail against the very best before the day was finished. MBYC ended up with a 1-5 record but showed they have no fear of being aggressive. I would say they learned a great deal from their experience and with some practice with team racing they could be one of the better teams out on the water. In the end the weekend was a great success. Everyone on MBYC had areas they did great in as well as areas they need to work. With much practice MBYC will be one of the finer teams out on the water day in and day out.
Solid Performance by MBYC at Jr. Invitational Regatta
MBYC made a great showing at the Jr. Invitational this past weekend at SDYC. On Saturday an inconsistent breeze from the south made everyone practice their light and heavy wind sailing skills. Two races were run Sunday in extremely light breeze. The MBYC team sailed well. Trevor Hecht took fourth place in C1, winning a race on Saturday then taking second the following. Olin Paine was fourth in A sabots, which places him in the top five overall in the North Series. All our sailors showed improvement over the weekend even fighting the shifty breeze on Sunday. New coach Charlotte Hughes did a great job guiding Trenton Austin, Ian Bellin, and Trevor Hecht to solid finishes. Kate Rakelly, Alex Ranum, and Matt Hecht all placed mid fleet with good and bad finishes. It was great to see everyone out there and a big thanks to the Ranums, Paines, and Bellins for towing.
