Head Coach Jack Kerr's Coach's Report

Coach’s Report:  Over the course of the past week, the Mission Bay Yacht Club Summer Program is in full swing.  We have an Advanced C Fleet Sabot clinic that are two 3 week sessions where our younger Sabot Sailors are learning more and more about what it takes to be an advanced racer and compete at a high level.  With the help of two Junior Instructor’s by the name of Alex Ranum and Matt Morris, along with another Head Instructor, Eric Allimillo, these 9 MBYC Sabot racers are getting over 4 hours of on the water time as well as at least two hours of chalk talks a day.  The course is set up where each day the class focuses on a specific aspect of sailing, such as boatspeed, boathandling, tactics or starts.  The class begins with a discussion on the previous days work and proceeds with either going over an article that is pertinent to the day’s drills or a chalk talk by either myself or Eric about the proper way to sail throughout a race.  Within the past week, these young sailors have improved tremendously on their boathandling and boatspeed as well as their starts and especially their tactics.  These sailors have been focusing on sailing the lifted tack as well as looking up the course and finding where the best breeze is and why.  With Sabot Nationals approaching, my goal as the coach of Mission Bay Yacht Club is to not only get these young sailors to a point where they can qualify for Nationals, but to compete at Nationals at a very high level.  Feel free to come down and take notice of the progress our young sailing team is having throughout each day.
As we speak, we have a few MBYC teams that are competing as well as preparing for some of the most prestigious Jr Regattas around the country.  The teams of Kevin Laube and Jake Reynolds as well as Olin Paine and Charlotte Hughes are competing in the US Youth Championships held in San Francisco over this weekend.  The Team of Evan and Scott Hoffman and Eric Allimillo are not only competing next weekend for the Sears Cup, but are also training for the Governor’s Cup Invitational Keelboat Match Racing Event.  For those of you that are not familiar with Sears and Governor’s Cup, Sears is the US Jr Triple-Handed Championship event which they won last year, and Governor’s Cup is the Jr World Invitational Keelboat Match Racing Championship.  There are only two US teams that were invited to the event.
