2018 Fall Gold Cup
Thirteen Team MBYC sailors and 3 coaches headed up to Newport for the first sabot regatta of the Fall season. Saturday saw very light, shifty breeze making for challenging conditions on the both the A, B, C1, C2 course and the C3 course. With sailors in every fleet, we had a nice spread across the board with Coach Simone on A/B, Coach Aine on C1/C2 and Coach Cragan on C3. Sunday saw a little more pressure on the course, but still challenging shifts kept the racing extremely interesting with lots of movement up and down the results page.
After 10 races in the 28 boat C3 fleet, Alex, Carlin and Will ended up 12, 14 and 21 respectively. Alex, racing in his new boat, WON the final race of the regatta! Carlin and Will finished a race in 2nd and 3rd showing our C3 sailors have so much potential! "The C3 fleet venue was especially challenging as the course was very short between marks. This kept the fleet pretty compact and when you add that to the mix of mostly inexperienced sailors, the potential for getting fouled and knocked around by other boats is huge and can be pretty devastating. The kids learned how to deal with this as the regatta progressed and you could see that in their results." - Coach Cragan.
On the "outside" course, the largest fleet of the event was the C2 fleet with 29 boats. All four of our racers finished in the top 10 with Colin, Paige and Daisy trophying 3rd, 4th and 5th! Julia was just outside of the top 5 with an impressive 8th overall. In the 19 boat C1 fleet, our solo representative Kaden had three bullets to earn him a 3rd place trophy. "The kids all had moments where they needed to come back from a tough finish and they each followed up with a great race to keep them in the game. This shows strength of character and is something that we are always working on." - Coach Aine.
The B fleet had 17 boats and Team MBYC sailors Ben and Oakley had several strong finishes. Ben trophied in a very solid 5th place, with the next boat 25 points behind. Oakley sailed hard right to the end with a 5th in the last race and earned 7th overall. In the highly competitive A fleet, our young, up-and-coming stars, Shane, Efe and Owen, worked really hard among the fleet full of older kids, mostly teenagers. The next few years will be exciting as these three and other Team MBYC sailors as they are promoted to the A fleet, start working their way into the top 10. Go Team MBYC! RESULTS HERE
